Clamp-on transit time ultrasonic flowmeters are ideal for commissioning, fault finding and temporary installation for surveys as there is no need to break into the line. As the name suggests they are simply applied to the outside of the pipe. To install one, the dimensions of the pipe (inside and outside diameter or outside diameter and wall thickness) are fed into the handheld unit, along with the preferred method of mounting and the speed of sound in your liquid (if not one of the common ones in the pre-programmed list). The handheld unit then gives you how far the transducers need to be spaced, once affixed minor adjustment may be necessary to get the best signal and you are ready to take readings. These can be stored using the built-in data logging function and downloaded as a CSV file from the SD card at a later stage for analysis. The SL1278P comes as a complete portable kit with just about everything you need, if you don’t know the inside diameter of the pipe or the wall thickness then adding a DMV-350 Ultrasonic wall thickness gauge is always recommended.
